The Macintosh jacket (or “Mac” for short) has been a wardrobe staple for nearly 200 years. It’s arguably one of the most influential jackets of its time. The original Mac jacket was created in 1823 by Scottish chemist and inventor Charles Mackintosh. The initial raincoat was made from rubberized cloth – a fabrication process also patented by the late inventor.
I first introduced the Mac jacket to my wardrobe in 2015. It’s been a staple in my closet ever since! The Mac jacket is the epitome of versatility as it pairs well with a variety of style options such as smart casual, suit style, and casual style.
Smart Casual
Pairing a Mac jacket with smart casual attire is a great way to create a stylish and versatile look. Since my style leans more smart casual, I keep the raincoat at the front of my closet especially during transitional or rainy seasons. Here are some tips to help you achieve a sophisticated and refined smart casual appearance:
- Layering: Smart casual often involves layering. Consider layering it over a casual sweatshirt, blazer, merino sweater, or cardigan, depending on the weather. This adds a touch of sophistication and warmth to your outfit.
- Selecting Bottoms: Pair your Mac with tailored chinos, dress pants, or dark denim jeans.
- Experiment with Colors: While maintaining a base of neutral colors, don’t be afraid to incorporate subtle pops of color through accessories or clothing items.
I most recently paired a burgundy Mac jacket with a vintage vest that I happened upon while visiting Amsterdam. The overcoat effortlessly elevated the look. The Macs clean lines and timeless design provided a polished finish, seamlessly marrying practicality with tailored style.
Suit Style
One classic combination that has stood the test of time is the Mac jacket over a suit. I haven’t styled a Mac jacket with a suit nearly as frequently as I have with smart casual attire.
Similar to smart casual attire, pairing a Mac with a suit can be a stylish and practical choice, especially in unpredictable weather. Here are a few tips to help you achieve a well-balanced appearance:
- Choose the Right Mac: Opt for a Mac jacket that is neutral in color such as navy, camel, or black. These colors are versatile and can easily complement a variety of suit colors.
- Select a Complementary Suit: Choose a suit that complements the color of the Mac jacket such as solid colors or subtle patterns as bold patterns might clash with the fabric of the Mac jacket’s design.
- Mind the Length: Ensure that the jacket complements the length of the suit jacket. Ideally, the overcoat should be slightly longer than the suit jacket to provide suitable coverage.
- Focus on the fit: Both the jacket and the suit should fit well. A tailored fit is crucial for an elegant appearance.
Casual Style
Styling a Mac jacket casually involves combining it with relaxed and comfortable pieces. Here are a few tips to help inspire your casual style:
- T-Shirt and Jeans: Pair your Mac jacket with a crewneck or henley t-shirt. Choose a well-fitted pair of jeans for a timeless and comfortable combination.
- Casual Sneakers: Slip on casual sneakers for a relaxed and sporty feel. White sneakers are always a great choice as they are versatile and complement many casual outfits.
- Accessories: Consider adding accessories like a beanie, a watch, or a casual belt to enhance your overall look. Sunglasses are also a great addition.
Remember to keep the overall outfit relaxed and comfortable. The Mac will seal the deal, adding a touch of sophistication.
