The Art of Cardigan Style

As I reminisce about my childhood, I can vividly recall my mom’s tradition of gifting me cardigan sweaters during special occasions. It’s funny how time and perspective can change things. Looking back, I realize that I didn’t fully appreciate those cardigans at the time. My reactions were often not towards the gift itself, but rather towards the fact that it came from the women’s section. I never liked the fit of women’s tops or sweaters. I would complain that the sleeves felt like they were in my armpits and I couldn’t move comfortably. However, I now understand that my preference was for menswear, something that I wasn’t able to articulate back then.

I was a late bloomer when it came to realizing my queer identity, so my mother didn’t know to gift me men’s clothes because I didn’t have the vocabulary or knowledge to express my style preference.

I grew up in the 90s when tomboy fashion was popular. Every young girl during that era wanted to emulate the style of the hip-hop artists who influenced us like Queen Latifah, TLC, and Aaliyah. Seeing myself in the female artists that inspired me empowered me to embrace my tomboy style. However, it wasn’t until I came to terms with my sexual orientation that I started to energetically understand my style preference and identity. This realization was a huge milestone that helped me to feel more comfortable in my body, leading to the discovery of my style.

Now, I appreciate my mother’s fashion sense more than ever before.

These days, versatility and comfort center my style choices, and the cardigan is a timeless wardrobe staple that effortlessly blends both of those elements. This iconic piece has elevated my style in so many ways that I like to think I’ve mastered the art of cardigan style.

Casual Cool

Cardigans are incredibly versatile in casual settings. Personally, I love to wear a chunky, cable knit cardigan in earthy tones such as brown or olive for a laid-back, casual cool look. You can easily layer it over a solid or graphic T-shirt or a casual button-up shirt to achieve a relaxed yet stylish appearance.

During the spring season, I typically pair it with a T-shirt and complete the outfit with medium blue or dark jeans and a fresh pair of wallabies, kicks, or Birkenstocks. This has become one of my go-to outfits for weekend activities and hanging out with friends.

The Art of Cardigan Style

Style possibilities are endless when it comes to cardigans. Its button-down front and construction make it an ideal layering piece that adds depth and texture to your outfits. You can dress it up with a refined and sophisticated look, explore a laid-back outfit, similar to how I rocked it here, or embrace a more fashion-forward, modern contemporary aesthetic.

Cardigans are versatile and can be worn all year round with the right style adjustments. In warmer months, they pair well with lightweight t-shirts or linen shirts for a breezy look. During transitional seasons like autumn or spring, a medium-weight cardigan is my go-to for added warmth and comfort without the bulk of heavier outerwear.

In my opinion, the cardigan deserves a prominent place in everyone’s wardrobe. Whether you prefer classic elegance, causal coolness, or contemporary trends, the cardigan offers an array of outfit possibilities, allowing you to continue to explore your personal style and expand your wardrobe.

I think, I wish I had found this spot earlier. I am truly digging your writing. As a woman who is looking to up her wardrobe game and has always felt a bit timid going the suit route, this space has given me great confidence. Thanks for being you. The She Gent Power is real!
