Growing up in the 90s, oversized clothing was the swag! That particular aesthetic wasn’t just for the guys. Artists and style icons like Queen Latifah, TLC, Da Brat, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Aaliyah all reminded us that oversized clothing looked just as good, if not better, on women as well.
Over the past few years, with the revival of the 90s, oversized clothing has made a comeback. Y’all know I’m not one for trends, which is why it’s taken me so long to incorporate oversized clothing into my wardrobe. However, I do believe that there is a way to strike a balance between “on trend” and your “unique personal style” so that you don’t look like everyone else.
Oversized Crew Sweater
This winter, I’ve incorporated oversized crew sweaters into my smart casual wardrobe. As I mentioned in my recent post about smart casual attire, sweaters, and in this case, oversized sweaters are extremely versatile and offer endless possibilities.
Whether in a solid color or a pattern, an oversized sweater is a stable all by itself! If you opt for something that’s eye catching like the oversized pattern crew sweater that I’m wearing then keep it simple on the bottom. The solid black trousers kept the look clean and balanced.
Next thing to keep in mind is what you layer under your oversized sweater. There’s no need to layer a button-up shirt under your sweater because it’ll probably get hidden. If you wanted to add a layer for warmth then a turtleneck is your best option. Other than that, keep it simple and wear a crewneck t-shirt. As for the shoes, a clean pair of black derbies is all you need to seal the deal on an outfit like this.
Remember, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
