Bold, Powerful, and Timeless…are just a few of the words that come to mind when I think of the navy pinstripe suit. I introduced pinstripes into my closet almost a decade ago. As I started to curate my modular wardrobe, I knew I wanted to add a versatile ensemble that could be worn on any occasion and the navy suit has not disappointed me yet!
In this guide, I’ll share how the pinstripe suit can help to expand your wardrobe and leave a lasting impression no matter the season.
Selecting the Right Fit
The foundation of a polished look is a well-fitted suit. Whether custom-made or off-the-rack, you want to ensure that the suit is tailored to your body type and style.
Top to bottom:
The way the blazer sits on your shoulders is the most important aspect! You want the jacket to sit properly on your shoulders to avoid interfering with the front panel of the jacket. Your trousers should be clean and tailored, sitting at the ankle or just above your dress shoes.
Choosing the Right Shirt and Tie
For a traditional and classic business look, opt for solid colors or subtle patterns to compliment the pinstripe suit. A crisp white dress shirt is a smart, classy, and safe choice, however, light blues, soft purples, and pale pinks are just as stylish. As for the tie, select a conservative tie that coordinates with the suit to complete the professional look.
Custom-Made Details
Reminder, whether off-the-rack or custom-made, the fit is imperative to achieve an impeccable look. With that said, if personalized details are just as paramount, I recommend investing in a custom-made suit. One of my favorite aspects of tailor-made suits is that they serve as a canvas, allowing me to express myself through the garments. For example, I chose a shawl lapel for a softer touch to the collar versus a notch or peak lapel, engraved my initials underneath my lapel fold, and added side tabs to my trousers for easy adjustment and a sleeker look. Imagine how your creativity might shine through if you invested in a suit designed by and fitted for you.
Mind the Occasion
While the navy pinstripe suit is inherently elegant, different occasions call for different looks. A necktie, tie bar, and pocket square can elevate the suit for formal attire. In today’s fashion world, a tie isn’t always needed for everyday businesswear. Keep it professional yet cool with a complimenting solid button-up shirt.
