When I first started this chapter of my life, She’s a Gent, my solo focus was sharing how women can also rock menswear, specifically suiting. But, much has changed since this then, as it should. I went from wearing suits with lapel pins and ties, to suits and t-shirts, to complete casual wear. Also, as our language continues to evolve, I find myself better understanding labels (should I chose to use them) that best reflect who I am. While I identify as a gender non-conforming queer woman – at times, my identify is dependent upon my daily style. For example: on a day where my ensemble feels softer or more feminine, I may label myself as androgynous where as, on a day where I’m wearing bolder and more masculine pieces, I may identify as masculine of center. Overall, gender non conforming feels like the right identity marker for me. For those who aren’t familiar with the term or language, gender non conforming means that my ‘behavior or appearance does not conform to cultural and social expectations about what is appropriate to gender.’ So, just because I identify as a woman doesn’t mean that I have to act “feminine” or wear “womenswear.” Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s talk about today’s style.
Work With Who Supports YOU!
One thing that I heavily pride myself on is working with brands that support and respect the communities that I represent. By now, you should know that The Tailory NYC is one of those brands. Shao Yang, the founder of the custom clothier company, is the epitome of allyship. Yes, she’s a fashion expert, but what I love most about her is that she never lets her expertise or stylist opinions get in the way of how she works with people. She fully respects my identity and creates clothing that fits my preferred appearance and aesthetic. One of the other reasons I love working with her is because she is constantly exploring new and innovative ways to push the fashion envelope.
Linen Aloe Shirt
The Tailory NYC recently introduced a new linen shirt collection. The materials that make up this linen shirt are infused with the extract of the aloe vera plant, making the fabric even more durable, breathable, and softer against the skin. No exaggeration…this innovative fabric has allowed me to feel a little cooler – pun intended 😊- throughout this summer’s heatwave. And, what better way to stay summer cool than rocking what makes you feel comfortable in your skin. Remember folks, you’re unique, and that is your greatest superpower. Don’t let anyone strip you of that!
