Traditionally, the sartorial technique of patchwork consists of artistically and uniquely piecing together small pieces of different fabrics to create a quality layer. A decade ago, the trend swept the fashion industry and runway appearing in various collections by designers like like Cavali, Oscar de la Renta, and Hermès. Recently, patchwork has resurface alongside the denim craze including styles like ripped jeans with patches and multi-fabric denim jackets. In the warmer months, Ralph Lauren is known for producing a bright quilted blazer, trouser, or pair of shorts. Overall, I think it’s safe to say that the trend itself is not widely seen throughout mainstream fashion.
Patchwork may not be a trend, but that didn’t stop Shao Yang (The Tailory New York) from creatively producing a grey monochromatic patchwork suit. In her words, “We are not making you a basic grey suit. It’s been done already. Plus you’re not traditional so why opt for a solid grey suit when we can step outside of the box and push the boundaries.” Honestly, I can’t say that I disagree with her sentiments.
Shao and I are a perfect match. Her innovative spirit coupled with my urge to break barriers and push the norm is illustrated in the details of my newest suit. The bold grey monochromatic suit is made up of three different fabrics: light grey plaid, dark grey plaid, and houndstooth. In order to maintain a monochromatic theme, I slipped on a solid dark grey turtleneck. This also allowed for the plaid details of the suit to really pop. The double breasted suit is so impactful by itself that I didn’t feel the need to add extra accessories. I kept it simple with a black leather watch and double monk strap shoes.
I can’t wait to share the various ways that this suit can be worn.
