As I reflect on the last 4 years, the only thing I can say is that I’m truly BLESSED! The world of digital media (i.e: blogging and social media) is not an easy space to navigate. It can be a very toxic, full of envy, false assumptions, expectations and negativity. I find that the most important thing is self-care, safe spaces, and surrounding yourself with positive, driven people.
The Tailory NYC is more than a partnership; it’s grown into a friendship! Two years ago, Shao and I parted ways. During what I like to call my “growth period”, I reflected on our partnership vs. relationship, common goals, and building opportunities. Shao is like my other half. As women of color, we understand each other and what it takes to make it in what has always been a male-dominated world. Our goal is, and has always been to disrupt the status quo while also empowering women.
Jean-Michael Basquiat said, “I am not a black artist. I am an artist!” Shao shares his sentiments. She’s not a menswear or womenswear designer; she’s a designer, period.
Inspired by Basquiat, Shao decided to merge the world of art and fashion by applying the paint brush to the suit. Initially, it was just going to be a fun project between the two of us, but we started think bigger! What better way to break barriers than to create a presentation during NYFWM titled UNGENDERED, an exploration of creativity, self expression, and fashion through the eyes of masculine presenting, non-binary, gender fluid, and gender non conforming LGBTQ+ women.
It was an honor to stand next to these amazing humans and to be a part of The Tailory NYC’s first capsule collection. Special thank you to Shao for being a genuine, honest, and beautiful soul. I can’t wait to open more doors with you!
