The first iteration of the cargo pants was developed in 1938 by the British military. They were first crafted for paratroopers who had to jump out of the plane and be ready for battle as soon as they hit the ground. The cargo pants were a perfect way for soldiers to keep supplies on hand. The original cargo pants displayed a single patch pocket that sat on the front of the British dress uniforms (BDUs).
A few years later, the U.S. military adopted the idea of cargo pants and created their version called the “paratrooper pants”. After World War II, dual cargo pants became a standard issue for almost every branch of the U.S. military.
As the daughter of two military parents, one of those being a marine who served for 30 years, I vividly remember visiting my father on base, seeing him proudly walk with his head high, back straight, and feet down in his Marine Combat Utility Uniform, known as “Cammies.” Depending on their duties, Marines have a variety of cammies: the tan and brown desert uniform, the white and gray-patterned cold-weather gear, and the uniform that I remember most, the signature green print known as “Woodlands.”
As I’ve gotten older, more and more, I’m realizing how much my parents have and continue to influence my style.
Cargo pants have been a signature garment in my wardrobe since I was a youngin’. It makes sense though…I was raised in the 90s when cargo pants gained popularity, I’m a military brat, and, as my mom would say, “I’m a daddy’s girl.”
Cargo Pants Style
Cargo pants are the epitome of versatility in the world of fashion. These iconic trousers have transcended their utilitarian origins, offering a style that effortlessly adapts to various occasions. From streetwear to high fashion, cargo pants have proven that they are more than just practical attire – they are a canvas for individual expression.
Here are more fashion-forward, modern contemporary aesthetics to inspire you.
Cool and Relaxed
Wearing cargo pants casually is about striking the perfect balance between comfort and style. These versatile trousers, with their ample pockets and relaxed fit, are ideal when you want to embrace a laid-back, yet put-together look. Pair them with a basic t-shirt or a casual button-down, and you’ve got an effortless, cool, and functional outfit.
During the fall/winter seasons, I typically pair cargo pants with a denim shirt or jacket, cozy hoody, lightweight sweatshirt, or wool sweater. However, there are endless casual style options. It all depends on your style of expression.
Smart Casual
Cargo pants can add a touch of rugged sophistication to your smart casual style. Their utility pockets and relaxed fit provide a unique and trendy contrast to traditional smart casual attire, seamlessly creating a stylish, urban edge to your outfit.
In warmer months, they pair well with t-shirts or linen shirts for a breezy look. During transitional seasons like autumn or spring, I really test my creative style, exploring layers and bold colors.
In my opinion, cargo pants deserve a prominent place in everyone’s wardrobe. Pair them with a blazer and turtleneck, a blazer and sweater, or a shirt and tie. Your style options are limitless so don’t be afraid to explore your uniqueness.
She’s a Gent Reminder
Remember, personal style is a reflection of your uniqueness. It stems from your life journey including connections to your parents, interests, creativity, and the many things that inspire you. Ultimately, personal style is developing a sense of self.
