How to Wear: The Single-Breasted Windowpane Suit

A windowpane suit is defined by its distinctive pattern. The distinguishing feature of a windowpane suit is its grid-like pattern of evenly spaced lines that intersect to create the appearance of large, square or rectangular shapes reminiscent of window panes. Hence its name.

The stitch lines are typically lighter than the base color of the suit, creating a subtle yet unique pattern. Windowpane suits are often seen as a stylish choice for those looking to finesse to their wardrobe a bit more while still maintaining a professional appearance.

As I began to expand on my wardrobe, I realized that I was favoring double-breasted suit styles of various patterns. I partnered with The Tailory New York to design this single-breasted windowpane suit in order to enhance and bring more balance to my wardrobe.

In this guide, I’ll share how the windowpane suit can help to expand your wardrobe and provide tips on how to wear it stylishly.

Consider the Occasion

The way you style your single-breasted windowpane pant suit can vary depending on the occasion. That said, as women in menswear, we are boundary pushers. Don’t be afraid to incorporate subtle flair that is representative of your uniqueness.

For formal events, stick to classic accessories and a tailored fit. Opt for a crisp white shirt for a timeless and elegant look. Make sure your suit is tailored to your body shape and fits well in the shoulders, chest, and waist.

For business settings, gauge always your workspace. If you work in a law firm, consider sticking to classic and conservative combinations. The simplest choice for black, blue, and grey suit wearers, is a white shirt. However, blue and grey suits can also be paired with light blue, pink, or purple shirts. If you are feeling confident like I was in this style option, opt for a bold, contrasting colored shirt that won’t overpower your suit.

For social events, feel free to inject your personal flair: bolder accessories like a tie or jewelry.

For more casual settings, experiment with different shirt options or even dress it down with a pair of loafers and a t-shirt. Also, depending on the season, ditch the button-up and opt for turtleneck or merino sweater instead.

Tie and Pocket Square Selection

Choose a tie that coordinates with the suit. A solid in a shade that compliments the suit can add sophistication and depth to your outfit. Alternatively, a patterned tie with complementary colors like a subtle polkadot, stripe, or geometric design, can bring a more visual appeal to your ensemble, as long as it doesn’t clash with the windowpane suit.

If you’re wearing a tie, consider a pocket square for an extra touch of elegance. A pocket square in a coordinating color or pattern scheme can add a dash of personality to your outfit.

Selecting the Right Shoes

The style of the shoe can also vary depending on the occasion. You can opt for a pair of oxfords, derbies, loafers, or even leather sneakers. If your suit trousers call for a belt, be sure to match your belt to your shoe color for a refined look. Most importantly, make sure your shoes are polished and in good condition to complete the sharp and sophisticated look.

Wear the Windowpane Suit as Separates

A single-breasted windowpane suit is a timeless choice that combines traditional tailoring with modern elegance, making it a versatile option that can be styled many ways. This includes styling the blazer and trousers as standalone garments.

The single-breasted windowpane suit is prime for smart casual style. Here are a few times where I’ve ditched the suit jacket and styled the pants alone.
