Da Republic of Brooklyn

Uber continues to expanded beyond ride sharing into community building. What better way to inspire others than with a docu-series that highlight different connections. Uber Presents is a short film series that explores and uplifts the dreams, journeys, and voices of driver-partners and riders all around the world. On July 11th, Uber released its latest collaboration with Spike Lee titled, Da Republic of Brooklyn.

Spike Lee and Uber overlap in their pursuits to push boundaries in their respective industries by creating spaces and opportunities for marginalized communities. Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, School Daze, Crooklyn, the list goes on; all of Spike Lee’s films are thought provoking, empowering, and a source of inspiration which is why I’m so excited to help amplify the activation and voices of others.

Da Republic of Brooklyn

Uber Presents: Da Republic of Brooklyn highlights the hustle and journey of five Uber driver-partners chasing their dreams in Brooklyn.

I relate to Keith Mabry’s story the most. We both have an obsession with our dogs, Steph Curry, and basketball. I couldn’t help but smile as he spoke about Steph Curry’s impeccable shooting streak during the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

All five driver-partners have unique stories, but the one thing that I have in common with them all is the way we hustle in New York City. Jay-Z once said “the city is a pity, half of y’all won’t make it.” It’s true! New York City is a daily grind. It’s a hustle that you have to be committed to otherwise the city will swallow you up.

My Hustle

Relating to public figures was always a challenge for me. When I turned on the television or picked up a magazine all I saw were white faces. After coming out, the only masculine of center woman that somewhat inspired me was Ellen DeGeneres. I struggled to find a queer person of color (QPOC) to look up to.

I first created ‘She’s a Gent’ to celebrate and explore personal style while using it as a tool for women in menswear. It quickly evolved into a source of inspiration for self expression, identity, travel, lifestyle, and more. My brand has become my hustle. I am committed to empowering the LGBTQ+ and POC communities through content creation and storytelling. I feel it’s my duty to fight to change the narrative and status quo of media so that it’s more inclusive of all types of people.

Thank you to Spike Lee and Uber for continuing to inspire me to chase my dreams and for allowing me to be a part of such an amazing project.
