Business of Blogging

Last month, Isiuwa Igodan invited me to speak on her panel: Business of Blogging. Based on the event title and subject matter, I was apprehensive about participating because She’s a Gent was not created to be a platform for monetization. My blog was created to bring visibility to underrepresented masculine presenting women and the LGBTQ+ community. After speaking with Isiuwa, I learned that her goal was for me to help educate young adults on the in’s and out’s of building a business, working with brands, self-employment, social media, and monetization.

Isiuwa is attending Pace University where she studies Communications with a minor in Journalism. Two years ago, at the age of 19, she created the Fluharty Scholarship – a scholarship fund awarding high school seniors an opportunity to purse their dreams by attending college. I was ecstatic to learn that all of the proceeds for the Business of Blogging event would be going toward the next recipient of the Fluharty Scholarship.

Business of Blogging panel was established to give young adults and content creators insight on the blogging industry. We discussed how to create a successful blog, best practices for social media, staying authentic, and why networking and relationship building is so important. The cherry on top of the sundae was having the privilege to sit on an all POC (people of color) panel; each person being an expert at their craft. And just when I thought that it couldn’t get any better, the entire audience was young POCs; the most brilliant minds of today.
