Natural Curls – Hair Routine

Becky can keep that ‘good’ hair (as the song says). Give me my natural curls, kinks, and coils all day long! I’m all about volume and fullness baby!!!

I have been on such a longtime hair journey! It’s so funny to look back now and reminisce about my long hair, but on the other hand, I’m continuing to celebrate and rejoice on how liberating it felt to chop it all off!

I really began caring about and properly maintaining my hair during my junior year in college. Back then, I was either getting it corn-rolled for the basketball season or religiously heading to the hair salon on Friday afternoons. My wash and set used to be laid and on point!

Over these past four years I’ve been fine tuning my skin fade. Also, if you’ve been following my journey then you know I went from straight/flat-ironed hair to my natural curly coils and kinks…which is by far my favorite hairstyle!

Natural Curls

One of the most liberating moments of my life was when I finally cut my long hair off. That simple, yet powerful, act literally changed my identity and presentation!! I’ve toyed with a lot of different hairstyles, but it wasn’t until I fully grew out the product that was damaging my hair and restricting me of my natural curly beauty that I finally felt like my true self!

I wanted to grow my hair out prior to the pandemic but that in between length is the WORSE!! I can say that ‘one of the good things’ that happened for me from having to quarantine during this Covid-19 pandemic is that I’ve been able to do just that, train my natural curls, and even get cornrows!

While the pandemic opened the door to me growing my hair, it wasn’t until after my first appointment with DevaCurl that I learned how to train, care for, and still maintain my curls.

Hair Care Routine

I tend to wash my hair every 4-5 days when rockin’ my natural curls. My wife also has curly hair, but our routines are very different. So, if you’re someone that has coarse curls and tight coils then my routine might work better for you. Here’s my recipe:

  1. I like to make sure my hair is squeaky clean so I shampoo twice – both times with warm water. I use a scalp massager on the second wash, which gives my scalp a little extra lovin’ 😊
  2. When I’m ready to apply some conditioner, I change the water from warm to cold because it helps my scalp and my hair to perform better for the styling process. I part my hair in circular sections and finger comb the conditioner through section by section until my whole head is complete.
  3. Next, I put my hair in a bun and let the conditioner sit for 10-15 mins.
  4. Then, I rinse out the conditioner and I finger comb my hair all the way through.
  5. Next, I re-part my hair from bottom to top and use my fingers to apply and comb through my styling gel. (Note – Every other week, I’ll layer in a deep conditioner plus the styling gel…but today was a non-deep conditioning day).
  6. Finally, I shake out the excess water, swirl my curls the way I want them to be and let my hair air dry.

What Products Do I Use for Natural Curls

I’ve used a handful of products of the years like Shea Moisture’s Coconut and Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo and Conditioner, Shea Moisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil Grow & Restore Shampoo and Conditioner, OGX’s Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner, and Cantu’s Coconut Curl Cream. All of these products are great, however, the two brands that work best for my hair are Prose and DevaCurl.

Prose

Prose creates 100% custom haircare products made for your hair type, goals & lifestyle. Their online process is super easy. Click “Get Your Formula” and answer a series of questions that will help them better understand your unique needs, goals, lifestyle, and daily environment. Prose will then recommend a fully customized routine of haircare and supplements guaranteed to deliver your dream hair.

Prose Hair Products

Over the summer, Prose helped me find and create the perfect shampoo, conditioner, and curl cream recipe for my hair, environment, needs, and goals. Now that the weather has changed, I’m due for something new to help combat the cold weather and the change in environment and weather.

Generic brands are great, but I highly recommend trying out Prose for a customize formula made just for you!

DevaCurl

What can I say, I’ve fallen in love with DevaCurl products! The brands new product line is even better than before!

DevaCurl Products

After my first appointment last year, I started using the DevaCurl No-Poo Original Cleanser, One Conditioner Original, and Arc Angel Gel (now called Supreme Defining Gel). However, my hair has changed some since then. It’s more coarse and has a lot more volume. I switched over to the No-Poo Decadence Cleanser and One Condition Decadence, which really nourishes my hair and adds back the moisture, shine, and bounce my hair needs.

Just a reminder, I wash my hair every 4-5 days and every other week, instead of using the One Condition Decadence, I’ll layer in one of my deep conditioners – either the Heaven in Hair or Melt Into Moisture. Just like on a non-deep conditioning day, I’ll seal the deal with the Supreme Defining Gel.

I recently tested out their new CurlBond Cleanser and Conditioner, which is good for repairing curls and re-linking broken bonds. I’m going to start incorporating these into my haircare routine after wearing my hair in corn-rolls. I’ll be sure to update you guys after washing with the new CurlBond products.

Also, check out my Black Friday where I share holiday deals that DevaCurl is offering until 12/31.

She’s a Gent Reminder

There’s nothing I love more than my natural tight curls, kinks and all. What I hope you guys take away from this post is that each person’s life and style or ‘hairstyle’ is their own self journey. Hopefully, with growth, we get better and, more importantly, become more comfortable in our own skin.

Love y’all ❤️
