The world wasn’t as inclusive when I first came out. I didn’t have a She’s a Gent to turn to for inspiration. It’s the reason why I created this platform. I wanted to help support the next generation because I knew what it felt like to not see myself in the media, TV, or film. Now…10 years later, the world has changed in many ways. We still have a long way to go…nevertheless, I’m happy to help contribute to the change we want to see in the world.
It’s interesting what you discover about yourself as you peel back layers. In my experience, this conscious journey has helped to stabilize my equilibrium, affording me more peace. Learning about and accepting my mental health challenges, quirks, and uniqueness has been an intense yet beautiful exploration of self. The more I uncover, the more comfortable I feel in my skin and style.
I’ve always been a tomboy, preferring loose-fit clothing over more feminine attire. However, as the She’s a Gent persona grew in popularity for suiting, I subconsciously put myself into a box, which limited my style. As of late, it’s been refreshing to rediscover other aspects of my style and create a more dynamic and balanced wardrobe that includes casual attire and smart casual attire.
Shawl Collar Sweater
Winter in the Northeast has started to settle in. While I can do without the brutally cold, windy weather, this time of the year, from a style perspective, I always look forward to experimenting with layers.
Fit is paramount with any ensemble. Whether tailored or relaxed fit, your garments should compliment your frame. I have a female frame with a skinny, athletic build. I rarely find off-the-rack clothing that fits me properly.
This Men’s Ralph Lauren Shawl Collar Sweater is meant to fit snugger than how I wore it. That said, I don’t think the designers had the female frame in mind when constructing it. Nevertheless, I think the loose fit works to my advantage as I have a variety of ways I can layer the semi-oversized sweater to match my tomboy style.
Shawl collar sweaters are easy to identify thanks to their wide turned-over collar that narrows in the front middle for a v-neck fold-over. One of the things I love most about the shawl sweater is its ability to adapt to various styles. I could’ve easily paired the jumper with smart trousers for a sophisticated, professional look. As I mentioned, after leaning into dapper attire for so long, lately, I’ve enjoyed bringing more balance to my closet by expanding my casual and smart casual wardrobe.
This ensemble is warm and comfortable, perfect for winter weather. The shawl collar sweater is ideal for layering. I wore a cream turtleneck underneath for contrast and extra warmth, slipped on my boyfriend jeans, and a pair of sneaker boots for a casual, relaxed look.
Remember to pay attention to the fit and proportions to ensure a stylish and flattering look. A shawl collar sweater will not only keep you warm but also elevate your style.
