Generational Wealth is pulling up to the house that your granddad built in the early 60s for his wife and two boys. The house that your granddad sat in front of with all of his rifles to protect his family during the Detroit riots. The house that your granddad raised your dad in and then spoiled you and your sister-cousins in. The house where your sister-cousin, your granddads oldest grandchild, now resides. You see, generational wealth is inheritance.
What defines Generational Wealth?
Generational Wealth refers to any type of assets that families pass down to their children, grandchildren or family members, whether in the form of cash, stocks and bonds, investment funds, properties, or companies.
One of the most common ways that folx pass on or inherit generational wealth is through real estate.
How can WE win?
Amerikkka… the land of Life, Liberty, and Equality for those with privilege!
The inhumane treatment and brutality towards Black bodies, Black families, Black homes, and Black businesses for centuries have so often been the White Supremacy’s driving force and hindrance towards our success.
One example is the ‘1893 Lynching at the Curve‘. where a white shop owner was so incensed at the success of a local Black owned grocery store nearby that he felt the need to spread rumors and trump up charges that eventually led to the Black owner being arrested and subsequently kidnapped by a white mob and murdered.
In 1921 there was the ‘Tulsa Race Massacre’ and in 1923 the ‘Rosewood Massacre’ occurred.
In both cities where Black people had built economic wealth and were self-sufficient there was always a White mob waiting in the midst to burn their businesses down and halt their success.
We know that Amerikkka was built on the backs of Black people. We built YOUR wealth and still have very little to show for it.
Legacy
I am keenly aware of my privileges amongst our people including the generational wealth that my family has inherited. I know that my story won’t resonate with everyone under the diaspora, but I hope it offers some inspiration and a reminder of what we need to hold onto.
Everyday, cities around the U.S. continuously wipe out our culture for the sake of gentrification! We may not always have the monetary resources to fix things up or stay in business, however, there is power in numbers if we work together. Last year alone, we showed the world just how powerful we are so let’s continue to show up for one another.
My family always tells me that I inherited my granddads style, swagger, and demeanor, but more than that his hustle. There’s one thing I know for sure that he taught me: stand up for what I believe in and never stop fighting!
To my brothers, sisters, and non-binary folx under the African Diaspora, hold onto every bit of generational wealth and assets that your family passes down to you. Your inheritances are the very things that allow for you to have continued wealth in this unfair country of ours.
Generational Wealth is Equity, Ownership, and YOUR LEGACY!
