My mental health has been challenged quite a bit over these few years. Honestly, I don’t know anyone whose well-being hasn’t been affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Studies have shown a direct correlation between social isolation, loneliness, and the effects it has on one’s mental health. Spending intimate time with yourself can open all sorts of Pandora’s boxes! The pandemic forced me to slow down and look inward in a way I had never done before. Talk about “looking at the man in the mirror.”

Losing your drive and spark as an artist can feel debilitating. Nothing inspired me! Everything just felt so bleak! No matter how hard I tried, I lacked my usual creative inspiration to lean into my artistry. On top of that, like so many, I was experiencing the rise of White Supremacy fueled by the 45th President all while being traumatized by the endless media loops and content that showed the brutality towards Black bodies. As if the pandemic wasn’t depressing enough, the events that unfolded and the propaganda of America preyed on my vulnerability, leading me to be unconsciously radicalized and forced to subscribe to the Caste System that I didn’t realize was stamped all over me. This culmination of mental trauma further exacerbated my depression.

My Mother’s Foresight

My mother is a Black woman. Therefore, I am a Black woman. However, my mother has always reminded me that I am also a “mulatto”/mixed-race woman. She never wanted to limit me to one ethnic background or identity because I come from so many. Instead, she encouraged me to celebrate all that I am. Her foresight laid a foundation for me, giving me insight into myself, in case I ever forgot who I was or someone tried to limit my being. For that, I am forever grateful!

Grounded Living

The conscious journey isn’t for the faint of hearts. It takes courage to change. After falling victim to the sunken place, I was determined to break free from the mental bondages of America’s caste system and reclaim my uniqueness just as my mother had taught me. As the late James Baldwin once said, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”

I turned to meditation and yoga, making them an integral part of my daily routine. I intentionally focus on using my breath to stay calm and present. This commitment has grounded me, heightening my awareness and shifting my consciousness. More importantly, this form of self-care has allowed me to develop an intimate relationship with myself. When you’re more cognizant of your triggers, behaviors, and quirks, you are better able to recognize others’ humanity. I hope this understanding and realization can help you to be more empathic and encourage you to bring more appreciation and positivity to our collective existence.

We all have mental health challenges. It’s a part of being human. Having the tools and support to navigate daily mental health is paramount to living the healthiest life possible.

Corduroy Trench Coat

Before the pandemic, I started to re-curate my wardrobe and not limit myself to suit style alone. I wanted to be more intentional about creating a smart casual wardrobe. The only problem was losing my creativity and inspiration. I must’ve ordered and returned a hundred clothing items during this period. That said, there were a few garments that inspired me like this corduroy trench coat that I snagged for $30 down from $110. Talk about a steal! The garment has brought more versatility to my wardrobe, becoming a staple item in my closet.

Corduroy has a classic and timeless appeal. Trench coats, in general, are also considered timeless pieces. A trench coat made from this material adds a unique and fashionable twist to this classic overcoat. The ribbed texture of corduroy adds depth to the coat and contrast to your outfit.

One of my favorite aspects of the corduroy trench coat is that it is suitable for multiple seasons, making it the perfect transitional piece. It can be worn comfortably in the fall, late winter, and spring, providing a stylish layer without being too heavy or too light. Look out Mac Jacket, seems like you have some competition in my wardrobe now.

The Outfit

Growing up in NYC, we often took school trips to The Metropolitan Museum of Arts (The Met). Back then, I was a naive kid who was not as aware of the world and cultures as I am now so I didn’t realize the hidden gem that is offered at The Met – The Astor Chinese Garden Court.

My wardrobe is darker in the Winter months as the days are shorter and lack sunlight. That said, the weather was perfect for the corduroy trench coat. I kept the look minimal, wearing the jacket over jeans and a sweatshirt for a laid-back yet sophisticated look. While the weather calls for darker colors, I try to protect my mental health from the gloomy cloud that lingers over the city throughout the winter. One of the ways I do this is by incorporating color in my outfit. The messaging on The Marathon Clothing sweatshirt was fitting for my recent conscious journey and paired seamlessly with the smart casual ensemble. Not to mention, blue hues can help to achieve a sense of calm in one’s mental health.

Reflection

When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. Perspective is about opening our minds to new possibilities.
