Smart Casual Athleisure Style

Growing up in the 90s, the Golden Age of Hip-Hop, athleisure was at the center of the culture. Artists like Missy Elliot, Jay-Z, Diddy, and The Fresh Prince, to name a few, shaped the way the culture saw fashion and style. At that time, hip-hop and basketball were so intertwined. So, as a basketball player growing up, playing in the mecca of basketball (New York City), hip-hop and style were at the center of my world. Thus, my athleisure style started to emerge.

It’s been interesting to see how athleisure has shaped the generations below mine. In recent years, athleisure has taken the fashion world by storm. Once again, hip-hop and sports are playing a pivotal role in the way fashion shapes ‘our’ culture while influencing how society, as a whole, dresses for both active and everyday occasions.

My style has evolved since I first fell in love with basketball and hip-hop. Long gone are velour suits and white uptowns or polo shirts, ripped jeans, and a fresh pair of kicks, preferably Jordans. These days, you’ll find me sporting smart casual athleisure. This style seamlessly combines the comfort and functionality of athletic wear with the sophistication of casual attire.

When choosing your pieces, opt for high-quality athleisure garments that are comfortable and stylish. Some of my go-tos are elevated basics such as a well-fitted sweatshirt, tailored joggers or windbreakers, and flow-fit shorts.

Having the right fit is crucial for any fashion style, including smart casual athleisure. It’s important to make sure your clothes fit well without being too tight or too loose. Personally, I prefer tailored pieces because they’re designed to fit your body shape perfectly, creating a sophisticated look that highlights your physique.

Balance is key in achieving a smart casual atheisure look. I find that pairing your athletic pieces with more formal or structured items helps create a sophisticated contrast. For instance, to remain cool on this hot spring day, I wore a breathable yet structured and tailored military-fit shirt with a pair of lightweight flow-fit shorts. The look is sophisticated and sporty, however, more than anything, it’s comfortable and functional.

When selecting footwear, it’s important to find a balance between comfort and style. Sneakers are a great choice for a casual, athletic look, but consider opting for a more refined design or monochromatic color scheme, like the classic Air Force One’s, to elevate your style. For a dressier option, pairing your outfit with a stylish loafer or low-profile boot, such as wallabees, can add a touch of sophistication to your look.

When it comes to completing your smart casual athletic ensemble, the right accessories can make all the difference. Keep it simple and chic with minimal pieces like a bold watch, delicate necklace, or stylish sunglasses. These subtle additions can elevate your look without overwhelming the overall aesthetic.
