2nd International Fashion Festival – Barbados 2017

Returning to Barbados for the 2nd Annual International Fashion Festival – Barbados 2017 (formerly known as BB Fashion Week) was an absolute treat.

I arrived at 4am, made it to the house by 5am, fell asleep at 6am, and was woken up by 8am. To my surprise, I wasn’t even tired. I was too excited to sleep. Plus, we had a jam packed weekend ahead of us which included a workshop, bridal show, swimwear show, and a men’s and women’s fashion show.

It was a short 4 day/3 night trip, but full of positive vibes and inspiring people. We met young new Caribbean designers, a Bajan artist, and we were even able to escape the fashion week madness for a 4 hour boat ride through the clear blue Caribbean water.

This trip was extremely impactful for me. It all began with the workshop. At the very last minute I was asked to speak about panel discussion on fashion and big business. I was a little nervous, but glad that I was given the opportunity. The outcome was amazing. I met more new designers, forged new relationships within the Caribbean culture, and inspired young models with my story.

Day 2 was even better. Barbados feels like home even though I come from a different world. We spent the first half of the in town with locals. We met a very talented Bajan artist, Sheena Rose. She’s a young lady with such powerful imagination and points of view. Her work reaches beyond the Bajan culture. She’s explored several countries and has vividly captured their cities in ways that I’ve never seen before. I highly recommend you learn more about her.

On our final day we escaped to the sea before the evening show. I snorkeled with turtles, swam with a school of fish, and floated in the clear blue Atlantic Ocean. It was relaxing and peaceful.

The finale was at an unexpected location, the Barbados Concorde Experience. This museum is home to the infamous British Airways Concorde G-BOAE, but for this night it was used as the runway for the final show. 2-hours full of 10 Caribbean designers ranging from vibrant colors in swim and resort to contemporary and classic prints and patterns. There were a handful of pieces that I wish I could have walked away with.

Special thanks to Rodney Powers for all of his hard work and efforts for the 2nd Annual International Fashion Festival – Barbados 2017. I look forward to next years festivities.
